Consultancy in Neurosurgery combined with a Clinical Professorship in Neurosurgery with special focus on clinical research

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Neurosurgery with special focus on clinical research at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the clinical position.

About the department The Department of Neurosurgery at Rigshospitalet is one of the leading neurosurgical departments in Europe, specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with disorders of the brain and peripheral nervous system.
The department serves patients from the Capital Region, Zealand Region, as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands, covering a population of approximately 2.8 million people. It performs approximately 3,450 brain and peripheral nervous system surgeries annually and handles over 10,400 outpatient visits. The department operates a 29-bed inpatient unit, a semi-intensive care unit with 10 beds, and a 16-bed ICU.
The department is led by a chief neurosurgeon and a team of approximately 160 staff members, including 15 medical specialists in neurosurgery and two professors. It is part of the Neuroscience Center at Rigshospitalet, which encompasses seven specialized centers with a total of about 1,450 full-time equivalents and 300 beds. Clinical functions and focus areas of the department The department handles both highly specialized and national functions across multiple neurosurgical subfields, including Skull base, Brain tumors, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders, Epilepsy surgery, Hydrocephalus treatment, Cerebrovascular neurosurgery, Pediatric neurosurgery, and Peripheral nerve surgery.
The surgical facilities include five operating rooms equipped with advanced navigation systems, intraoperative CT, and an MRI scanner dedicated to neurosurgical procedures. The department has one of Europe´s largest experiences with Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT).
The department is actively involved in both basic and clinical research, with a focus on Neurosurgical innovation, Neuro-oncology, including meningiomas, Pediatric neurosurgery, Hydrocephalus, Functional neurosurgery, Peripheral nerve surgery.
The department has a JTAAC accredited training program and is an active participant in the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. It offers specialized courses such as the "Copenhagen Skull Base Course" and the "Copenhagen Peripheral Nerve Surgery Course," attracting participants from around the world.
Research and teaching With the new position as clinical professor of Neurosurgery, the Department of Neurosurgery wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.
Qualifications Consultant applicant must be board-certified specialist in Neurosurgery. We are seeking a candidate with expertise in one or more neurosurgical disciplines, someone who can enrich our existing knowledge by introducing new perspectives and techniques, rather than duplicating existing practices. The ideal candidate will have completed a fellowship or possesses other relevant, advanced surgical experience in one or more of our core areas. Surgical experience and caseload will be given significant consideration in the evaluation process. The preferred candidate will have extensive and solid clinical experience, having held a key surgical role within the field of neurosurgery.
Conditions In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the clinical position) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet.
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor, 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining 50% will be allocated for clinical work (e.g., surgeries, on-call, ward rounds, outpatient clinic) in agreement with the head of Department of Neurosurgery, Copenhagen University Hospital.
