Consultancy in neurology combined with a clinical professorship in neurology with special focus on headache disorders and neurological pain

A clinical position as consultant of neurology at the Department of Neurology at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet is open for appointment from as soon as possible.



The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of neurology with special focus on headache disorders and neurological pain at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.



It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the department The Department of Neurology at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet serves patients with neurological diseases from the Copenhagen Area, and from other parts of Denmark, as well as the Faroe Islands and Greenland, at two sites: Rigshospitalet-Glostrup (Valdemar Hansens Vej) and Rigshospitalet-Blegdamsvej in Copenhagen.

​The department has in-patient wards for critical care neurology, stroke (offering thrombolysis and endovascular treatment) and multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation (in collaboration with Department of Neurorehabilitation). We have specialized out-patient clinics for headache, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disorders, dementia, movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and general neurology. Certified by the Danish Health Authority, we offer highly specialized treatments within most neurological subspecialties and have access to advanced neuroimaging, clinical neurophysiology, nuclear medicine, and clinical genetics.

The department is the home of several advanced clinical and translational research centres. We provide pre- and postgraduate teaching and training for medical doctors and other health care professionals.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The consultant is expected to see patients in the outpatient clinic for diagnosis and treatment, and to contribute to clinical care, research and management of headache disorders and neurological pain at The Danish Headache Center. The consultant will be expected to contribute to the clinical and scientific development of the neurological subspecialty headache disorders and to the continuous advancement of excellent and robust collaborations with other specialized departments at the hospital and at the regional and national level. The present position is also expected to initiate and conduct translational and clinical research in headache disorders in collaboration with other national and international centres.

The consultant will be expected to provide research-based teaching for medical students and for students in Master of Headache program at University of Copenhagen. Furthermore, the professor is expected to contribute to national and international post-graduate teaching of medical doctors, clinical staff and other health care providers.

The consultant will be expected to establish, develop and lead his/her own research group and to demonstrate international leadership in headache research and organization. The consultant will be expected to contribute to administrative and organizational tasks in the department. The consultant will report to the head of department and to the director of the Danish Headache Center.

Research and teaching With the new position as consultant in Danish Headache Center and Department of Neurology and clinical professor at University of Copenhagen the Department of Neurology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching. More specifically, the department wishes to strength the focus on headache disorders via international collaboration, educational activities as well as public outreach.



Qualifications Applicants must be board-certified specialist in neurology with clinical and research experience in the field of headache disorders and neurological pain.



Conditions In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital -Rigshospitalet.



Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.



As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of department of neurology.
