We are offering two three-year PhD-fellow positions in Forensic Chemistry with a three-month initial temporary position as research assistant. The temporary position relates to the preparation of a PhD-application, and the PhD fellowship is conditioned on enrolment as PhD-student and satisfying performance during the temporary position.



The PhD projects

  1. A project concerning detection of single doses of selected drugs in hair to assess the sensitivity of analytical procedures applied on drug-facilitated crime cases. The analytical methods will typically be based on liquid-chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Method optimization and validation will be important aspects.
  2. A project concerning assessment of postmortem reference intervals for psychoactive drugs in blood and brain tissue, which is based on retrospective data in the section. The reference intervals will be related to literature data and the intervals will be used for future case work.

The Section of Forensic Chemistry
The section carries out forensic examinations (alcohol, drugs and narcotics) for the judiciary and other public authorities, which make up the bulk of the section's activities. The section of Forensic Chemistry is one of three sections at the Department of Forensic Medicine (University of Copenhagen) carrying out research and teaching assignments according to ordinary university rules.

The section has about 35 employees, including one professor, two associate professors, 4 senior researchers, 6 forensic chemists, 2 postdocs, IT staff, 5 PhD students, 10 laboratory technicians and a number of thesis students. The department is equipped with modern instruments and IT facilities. The section is accredited to ISO 17025.



The person and qualifications
The typical candidate will be a person who is interested in analytical chemistry and toxicology as well as the techniques behind, and is thorough, careful and has an interest in scientific work. It is important that the new colleague has good interpersonal skills. It's the results that count, so we appreciate diligence, efficiency and purposefulness. Fluency in written and spoken English is a prerequisite.

Relevant academic education includes a Master’s degree in biochemistry, engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, analytical chemistry, toxicology or related fields. The applicant cannot hold a doctorate degree.



Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are:

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
  • Participate in active research environments including a stay at another research team
  • Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
  • Teach and disseminate your knowledge
  • Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project

The place of employment is at the Section of Forensic Chemistry, Dept. of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Terms of employment

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years. The start date is 1 September 2023 or after agreement.

The employment is conditioned upon the applicant’s success­ful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant during an initial three-month employment as a research assistant.

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree.

Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agree­ment between the Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary starts at approximately 27,800 DKK/Roughly 3,700 EUR (October 2021 level) plus pension.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor.

The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement.
